Ska at PAX West 2017 and Some Other Stuff!

It’s been a while, so prepare yourself for a flurry of information!

PAX West 2017!
We’ll be at PAX! This year we’ll be on Floor 6, booth #6317. Floor 6 is decidedly less crowded and decidedly more indie than the main sprawl, so that means more Ska Studios, fewer airborne superbugs. We’ll have the vat of hand sanitizer, anyway.

We’ll be running demos of Salt and Sanctuary, The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile, and Charlie Murder, and we’ll have shirts, Dishy plushes, game keys, and… for the first year ever… Pinnies!

Of course, we’ll also have us. Got a burning question about the Mad Alchemist? Want to fight James over The Witch of the Lake? You’ll definitely be able to do one but not both of those things!

We’re in some panels again! James will be in a panel about what it’s like developing solo, back in the days when he did just that, and I’ll be talking about the intersection between crafting and game development.

We have a legendary new merch item this year, and we couldn’t be more excited! We’ve partnered with Pinny Arcade to create a brand new Pinny of our Queen of Smiles boss from Salt and Sanctuary! We’ll have them for sale at PAX West 2017 for $15. Behold: Our Beloved Wraith Queen of Liven:

Achievement in Japan!

Late July, Playstation Japan invited us to share a momentous achievement, and we gladly obliged: Salt and Sanctuary has been downloaded more than 100,000 times in Japan on PlayStation 4 and PSVita. We are super honored and humbled to have been so well received in the birthplace of modern videogames! どうもありがとうございます!

One More Super Awesome Thing

I may have already shared this on our social medias, but last week we had the opportunity to take a tour of The Wizards of the Coast office and play Dungeons & Dragons with none other than Matthew Mercer! This amazing event came from Child’s Play, a fantastic charity that we love to support. As it happens, last year during the annual Child’s Play Charity Auction Dinner, we managed to snag the winning bid on some Matt Mercer D&D. And it… was… basically every birthday and holiday rolled into one. It was an amazing experience, and awesome to know that the proceeds went to a far great cause.

As always, you can get news from us via our Newsletter sign up here, buy cool merch stuff from us here and get our soundtracks here! And with that, here’s a dose of Gato for you. She really wanted to lay half on, half off my desk so I propped her up with my hand.

Friendly Friends

If you play video games, you likely have heard of The Behemoth or at least their games like Castle Crashers and BattleBlock Theater. They’ve been making games a long time! They’ve also been at San Diego Comic Con every year for a long time. 15 years, in fact!

This year, The Behemoth is welcoming some friends to join their booth and those friends include us! Next month, July 19 – July 23, we will be breathing the same air as everyone else attending SDCC and showing off Salt and Sanctuary and selling a few shirts! See you there in Hall A at Booth 229!

GDC, Postmortem and Salt and Sanctuary in Korean!

At the end of February, we traveled to San Francisco for GDC to deliver a 30 minute postmortem for Salt and Sanctuary. The talk will be available in the GDC vault, though we don’t know yet if it will be publicly available or only to attendees. It was an amazing talk with a full room, and we were really surprised and humbled by the great reception. One never knows how these things will go, and we aren’t the best of public speakers, but we still put on our presenter hats and did our best.

We also posted a write-up covering most of the talk over at the PlayStation blog! Go read the postmortem over here!

Salt and Sanctuary is now available in the Korean language! We launched on the morning of March 10th KST on Steam. You can check out some coverage already over at Inven , Ruliweb, and This is Game.

We now have this list of languages complete:

  • French
  • Italian
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese (Br)
  • Japanese
  • Korean

We’re also working toward Russian, Polish and finishing Simplified Chinese. Traditional Chinese may be coming as well.

We’re in certification for the PSVita! We can’t get into details (there are a few, and they’re not pretty), but going live by the end of the month is looking within our grasp. Sadly, we won’t be able to hit the one year anniversary of the PlayStation 4 launch, which is coming up next Wednesday! We apologize to everyone who has been waiting so patiently. It was, for the most part, out of our hands, but we think the wait will be worth it.

2016 and a New Year

Hey Ska friends! It’s been a long time, once again. I’ll start off with – no, there still is no release date for Vita. It’s been an uphill battle getting Monogame working with Vita but Sickhead Games and we are getting closer. We expect to submit to certification soon with a hopeful March time frame. That’s not an absolute promise but is the goal. As always, as soon as we can give a solid release date, we’ll be shouting it from the rooftops. The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile and Charlie Murder for Steam are also coming along nicely! We hope to have those two ready very soon.

We’ll be at the Independent Games Summit portion of GDC week, delivering a postmortem on Salt and Sanctuary. We’ll post notes or a blog around the week of GDC, covering the talk. If you happen to be there, “Postmortem: ‘Salt and Sanctuary‘” is Tuesday, February 28th at 3:50 PM PST.

You can watch the entire show here on YouTube.
  • Salt and Sanctuary was played on Awesome Games Done Quick by Grimelios! I watched the stream live and have to admit, I found the Spindlebeast attempts very amusing. Mwahahaha.
  • Salt and Sanctuary made Game Informer’s Top 50 games of 2016!
  • Geeks Under Grace Interview
  • We won a Fexy Award for Best Value
  • We made another top 50 games of 2016 at Cultured Vultures
  • If you know Greek or perhaps want to try out your browser’s auto-translate, here’s an interview at Gamepad.gr.
  • Perhaps the most surreal award, after the PlayStation Award, is this Zero Punctuation top 5 Goodest Game of the year accolade. Quite the strange honor!
  • It was an amazing year for us and this year should be a good one, too! Keep an eye out next week for a Valentine’s Day treat! (Not Vita related, sorry!) Stay Salty. <3
